What is a Video to GIF?

GIFs occupy a strange niche: technically an outdated format, culturally indispensable. A short looping clip explains in three seconds what a paragraph of text cannot — how a UI animation behaves, how a bug reproduces, how an exercise is performed. This tool converts a segment of your video into a GIF, entirely in your browser: the video is processed locally by an in-browser FFmpeg, and nothing is uploaded anywhere.

The tool does one important thing automatically that separates good GIFs from ugly ones: it generates an optimized color palette from your actual footage before converting, instead of forcing the frames into a generic fixed palette. That is why the output keeps reasonable colors despite GIF's severe format limitation — at most 256 colors per frame, no more.

The settings that shape the result: start and end times select the segment, and shorter is better — a looping two-to-four second clip is what people actually watch. Frame rate (10 fps is a sensible default; GIFs do not need more) and scale (320 pixels wide is the classic shareable size; go larger only for detail-heavy content) determine file size. GIF size scales with pixels times frames, so halving the width roughly quarters the size, and every extra second of footage adds weight linearly.

Set expectations honestly: GIF is wildly inefficient compared to video — the same clip as MP4 would be a fraction of the size. Choose GIF when the destination requires it: chat apps, README files, issue trackers, email signatures, places where autoplaying muted loops matter. If the destination accepts MP4, keep MP4. For screen recordings, trimming to the exact moment of interest before converting yields the best result.
